Topic on portal

Hi guys,
first of all thanks for this great mod!
Do you think you can get into the portal only the first post of a topic in order to create a simple news page?
I'm trying to follow this guide but I do not understand how to do:
Practical.Displaying posts and topics on external pages
I like something like this http://www.cricketmx.com
